Benefits of chewing and licking

  • Using Kong's, licky mats and natural chews as part of your daily routine will help your dog to decompress and let off steam. They remove the arousal that can build up on walks or in general during the day.

  • You can also use them before walks to give your dog a job to do if you are not ready to hit the streets (but your dog has other ideas!), just wait for them to digest the food before going out.

  • Putting the chew/Kong/licky mat onto a bed or mat where you would like your dog to go when visitors come or when you want them to relax will increase the value the bed has and encourage them to go there more often.

Natural chew's: There are lot's of exciting options, I must warn you that they are not for the faint hearted and can feel slightly yucky for some people! , but your dog will love them. Don't hesitate to drop into I want Pet Foods here we will be happy to offer you advice on suitable options for your dog. Fillings for Kongs and Licky Mats To make a filling for a Kong or licky mat use your dogs wet food or soak some kibble in water, you can then stuff this into the Kong or spread on a mat. To bulk out the daily wet food or soaked kibble and to make it more interesting for your dog blend it with anything you like (as long as it is safe for dogs to eat), such as natural yogurt, fruit, veg, fish, meat, lentils, oats, cooked egg, a small amount of cheese, peanut butter, coconut oil. Apparently spinach can help if your dog has a habit of eating grass! For a quick fix - insert a banana into a kong and fill the gaps with natural yogurt. Alternate the fillings to make it more interesting for your dog. Freezing kongs or licky mats makes them last longer and is great if your dog likes a challenge, or for teething puppies. Some people have more than one kong or mat so that they can freeze afew at a time and always have one ready to go. Or you could get into the habit of stuffing a kong and popping it into the freezer the night before at the same time as you feed your dog their evening meal so that you don't forget. Always observe your dog to make sure that they are chewing/licking safely and not left with the mat which they may start to eat.
