To kick off our breed of the week, we have the Boerboel, a South African breed developed in the 1950's.

A large mastiff breed that was used as a livestock guardian and homestead dog. A fantastically strong, well built and agile dog, the Boerboel is fearsome with a strong reputation for being family orientated and well balanced.
Weighing up to 75kg, the Boerboel needs a strong handler, firm boundaries and plenty of training to be a trustworthy family pet. A large space to house them is a must and plenty of exercise is unavoidable.

Boerboels are incredibly intelligent, highly trainable but regarded as difficult to motivate. They are generally healthy, but due to their size can be prone to hip dysplasia and heart disease.
Have you ever met a Boerboel?
