Hey guys, Wenzdi here from Yes Boy! with a little blog - today we are talking RECALL.
Recall is about THE most important thing you can teach your dog. A reliable recall is paramount in today's society, both for your dog's and public safety. But recall doesn't come naturally to most dogs. So what to I do to set our dogs up for success?
First of all, buy a long line. That's a lead of about 5-10 meters long. This is your control and management. This allows your dog freedom without being let loose. You can really train that recall without the risk of your dog failing then, so if they don't listen we can reel them in!
Next, we choose a recall word. 'Here' is usually the one, and we never expect the recall by name. Name gets your dogs attention, the recall word is your dog's instruction.
Remember to use your marker word at the point your dog makes the right decision - turning and making their way to you.
And then we feed when they get to you. Feed every time. Never do a recall without reward. The most reliable behaviour needs the most reliable reward schedule!
Don't forget to be fun! You have to be the best thing in the world for recall to work. Screaming your dog's name at the top of your lungs is not making you tempting to approach!
Running away, using a toy, playing food games and whistles and squeakers may up your recall reliability, so use them to your advantage.
And don't forget, practice makes perfect!
